EUGENE, Oregon - The dream of creating an improved quality of life in Eugene is one step closer to being realized, thanks to Arlie & Company, a Eugene-based real estate and development company.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the new Crescent Village was held on September 9, 2004, and was attended by more than 300 local government and business leaders and community well-wishers.
"Crescent Village is the kind of mixed-use nodal development local officials have been advocating for years," said guest speaker Jack Roberts, Executive Director of the Lane Metro Partnership, Lane County’s economic development agency. "Thanks to the vision and leadership of Arlie & Company, we have the chance to be a leader in innovative, cutting-edge community development."
The mixed-use development brings multiple benefits to the community, employers, retailers, and residents by providing a village center with surrounding high-density residential neighborhoods in the heart of northeast Eugene. It will feature a grocery store, small shops, restaurants, offices, pedestrian-friendly open spaces, and a variety of housing, including row houses, townhouses, condominiums, garden apartments, and lofts and flats over retail spaces.
Crescent Village is Eugene’s first New Urbanism development. New Urbanism has gained tremendous momentum and extraordinary respect around the country as cities discover the many benefits of mixed-use development. This type of development is designed using socially, economically and environmentally sound principles that have enjoyed great success in existing urban villages across the United States.
Larry E. Reed, Director of Development for Arlie & Company, believes the ceremony represents a vital milestone in the process of creating the first urban village in Eugene that mixes commercial, retail, and housing in a pedestrian-friendly environment. "Opportunities to develop a true urban village don’t come along very often," he says. "Crescent Village is large enough to accommodate a complete community, but small enough to be completely walkable. We are developing according to the principles of New Urbanism which call for a balance of all uses from the start.
"We’re excited about the opportunity to optimize the existing land, provide opportunities for local retailers and employers, enhance the local economy, and create a place where people can live without relying on an automobile."
Arlie & Company is developing Crescent Village with a commitment to meticulous planning, environmental stewardship, creative partnerships, integrity, and attention to detail.
